Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Q) I need a communication device. What’s available?
    A) Devices can include manual systems like boards and notebooks with pictures, words and letters where a user points with a finger or eye movements. Electronic systems include keyboards and screens with words, letters and picture symbols that speak or print out messages. Strategies are recommended after accessing the needs of language and physical abilities of a user, and having trials with device use. Therefore, you should let a Speech Pathologist with expertise in AAC determine which technology or strategy is best for you.
  2. Q) Where can I get a communication assessment/evaluation and from who?
    A) Contact the AT Network I & R Center or local Speech Pathologist and ask them to locate a Speech Pathologist with expertise in AAC within your area that offers AAC evaluations.
  3. Q)Where can I get demonstration and try out AAC devices?
    A) You can go to trades show, CSUN at LA International Airport (Annually in March), Ability Expo, CAMA, and CFILC throughout California. Device manufactures are sometimes available to provide demonstrations. Detail information attached, under Organizations and Resources.
