Optimizing Assistive Technology Service Delivery with Video Teleconferencing (VTC)

We are in the process of completing a grant funded by the National Institute of Disability Rehabilitation Research, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services. This project has developed a protocol to serve rural and distant clients through interactive video using ISDN lines. Our participating partners were North Bay Regional Center, Napa and Santa Rosa and Redwood Coast Regional Center, Eureka, Ukiah and Crescent City. Evaluations were conducted in several sessions with the individual’s full team at their regional site and the Stanford AT team remaining in Palo Alto. Fifty evaluations using this model were compared to thirty-three on-site clinics in terms of team satisfaction, travel time, number of participants and cost. Our most recent findings were presented in a poster session at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Conference in November of 2002. We are currently in process of completing a journal article and finishing a protocol manual.
