STEPHEN J. GALLI, chair of pathology, discussed "Individualized Medicine: Revolutionary Developments in the Understanding, Classification, Diagnosis and Prevention or Treatment of Disease" as part of the Medical Center's community lecture series on March 2.

MARY LAKE POLAN, chair of gynecology and obstetrics, has been selected as one of Women's eNews 21 Leaders for the 21st Century. Polan and 20 others were selected from more than 200 nominees and was honored at a gala on May 17 in New York.

PHILIP A. PIZZO, dean of the Stanford Medical School, spoke March 9 to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco about an array of challenges facing American Medicine in the 21st Century.

KULDEV SINGH, professor of ophthalmology, glaucoma service director, and assistant dean for medical student advising, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Glaucoma Society by the organization's membership. The American Glaucoma Society, founded in 1987, is made up of more than 400 members who have completed fellowship training in glaucoma and have made academic contributions to the subspecialty. Singh also serves on the executive committee of this society.

MARK WELTON, associate professor of surgery and chief of colon and rectal surgery, was featured during the weeks of March 14 and 21 on the SHC-sponsored "Profiles in Health" series on KCBS radio (am 710) and KPIX-TV (Channel 5). Welton highlighted new techniques for treating rectal cancer using a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery.

SALLY ARAI has been appointed to assistant professor of medicine (Bone Marrow Transplantation).

ANDREW CONNOLLY has been appointed to assistant professor of pathology.

YUEN TAT SO has been promoted to professor of neurology and neurological sciences.
