Awards and Honors:

MICHAEL LONGAKER has been selected by the Michigan State University Men’s Basketball Program to receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award. He played from 1976 to 1980 on the team, which won the NCAA men’s championship in 1979.

CRAIG ALBANESE was installed in late February as the first John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn Director of Pediatric Surgical Services at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Albanese, who came to the faculty in 2002, is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric surgery, especially minimally-invasive and fetal surgery.

ELLEN JO BARON, director of the Clinical Microbiology Lab and professor and associate chair of pathology for diversity and faculty development, was recently appointed to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for a four-year term starting July 1. The committee advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services on setting standards for quality assurance, quality control, personnel, proficiency testing, and records maintenance for all U.S. clinical laboratories. Baron also this year was voted chair-elect, starting in July, of the Clinical Microbiology Division of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). She becomes chair for a 1-year term starting in 2008 and becomes an ASM Councilor for another year in 2009.

DAVID CORNFIELD, professor of pediatrics, has been elected vice president (with succession to president in 2009) of the Society for Pediatric Research.

Three physicians were honored March 5 for contributions to patient care and the hospital in ceremonies by SHC and the School of Medicine:

• MARTIN I. BRONK, general surgeon, CEO of Menlo Medical Clinic and former Medical Staff President, was cited for services as a member of the SHC Board of Directors;

• BRUCE D. FELDSTEIN, Jewish chaplain and emergency physician, was named the first recipient of the Isaac Stein Award for Compassionate Care;

• NORMAN W. RIZK, professor of medicine and senior associate dean for clinical affairs, was honored as the first recipient of the Denise O’Leary Award for Excellence.

Stein and O’Leary are former leaders of SHC’s Board of Hospital Directors.

SHARON A. HUNT, professor of cardiovascular medicine, has been selected by the American Society of Transplantation to receive the Senior Achievement Award in Clinical Transplantation for 2007.


Appointments & Promotions:

RANJANA H. ADVANI has been promoted to associate professor of medicine (oncology).

JAMES ANDRUS has been appointed to clinical associate professor of pediatrics (Division of Critical Care).

MICHAEL BELLINO has been appointed to clinical associate professor of orthopaedic surgery.

WILLIAM E. BERQUIST has been promoted to professor of pediatrics (gastroenterology).

JED E. BLACK has been promoted to associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

GLENN COCKERHAM has been appointed to clinical associate professor (pathology).

LINDA FOPPIANO has been appointed to clinical associate professor of anesthesiology.

MARC L. MELCHER has been appointed to assistant professor of surgery.

KLAUS PORZIG has been appointed to clinical professor of medicine (oncology).

LAURA VARICH has been promoted to clinical associate professor of radiology.

PO WANG has been appointed to assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

WENDY WONG has been promoted to assistant professor of pediatrics (Division of Hematology/Oncology).
