Medical
board summary
At
its meeting in July, the SHC medical board took the following actions:
Approved a comprehensive Performance Improvement Plan for Stanford Hospital
& Clinics for 2003-2004. (See the president's column above.)
Approved three policies from the hospital's ethics committee, on "Ineffective
medical treatment," "Informed consent when adult patient lacks capacity,"
and "Health-care decisions for incapacitated patients who lack
surrogates." The first policy is not new but is required to be
reviewed every three years; the other two are new policies. (See story
on page 4.)
Approved a new policy on "Disaster privileges for licensed independent practitioners."
The policy establishes a procedure by which the hospital can grant temporary
privileges to external physicians in case of a disaster, to help the hospital
care for an unusually large number of critically ill patients.
