Medical board summary


At its meeting in July, the SHC medical board took the following actions:

Approved a comprehensive Performance Improvement Plan for Stanford Hospital & Clinics for 2003-2004. (See the president's column above.)

Approved three policies from the hospital's ethics committee, on "Ineffective medical treatment," "Informed consent when adult patient lacks capacity," and "Health-care decisions for incapacitated patients who lack surrogates." The first policy is not new but is required to be reviewed every three years; the other two are new policies. (See story on page 4.)

Approved a new policy on "Disaster privileges for licensed independent practitioners." The policy establishes a procedure by which the hospital can grant temporary privileges to external physicians in case of a disaster, to help the hospital care for an unusually large number of critically ill patients.

Ongoing turnaround efforts result in staff reductions at SHC
