Role
of clinician educators reviewed
In his July 26 newsletter, Medical School Dean Philip A. Pizzo reviewed the criteria and goals of the clinician educator, one of four academic tracks in the School of Medicine.
A task force chaired by Kenneth Cox, senior associate dean for pediatric and obstetric clinical affairs, "underscored the importance of the Clinician Educators to the ultimate success of our patient care mission - as well as the overall mission of the School and Medical Center," the dean said. The task force, Pizzo said "also recognized that this is a category that will require evolution to optimize success."
The dean noted that most of the 313 persons appointed as full-time or part-time clinician educators, have recently completed training and/or have been in their position for less than five years.
Pizzo said efforts are being made to recruit and retain clinician educators on a career path that "will enable them to provide patient care for approximately 90 percent of their time and devote the remainder to education of students, residents and fellows."
Other academic tracks in the school of medicine are investigator (or University Tenure Line), the Non-tenure Line Research and Educator track, and the Clinician-Scholar/Investigator (also called Medical Center Line).
