UCLA oncologist Jonathan S. Berek has been appointed chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and chief of ob-gyn at SHC.

"We look forward to Dr. Berek's leadership in expanding the outstanding services Stanford offers women," said Martha Marsh, hospital president and CEO.

Medical School Dean Philip A. Pizzo said that under Berek's leadership, scheduled to begin this month, the department will expand programs in gynecologic oncology, minimally invasive surgery and, in conjunction with the urology department, pelvic reconstruction. Berek, who has been a strong advocate for women’s health throughout his career, will also play a key role in Women’s Health @ Stanford, a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to promoting wellness and preventing illness in women.
