Remembrance and aid offered to Tsunami victims

SHC has responded to the Dec. 26 tsunami that killed some 150,000 people in 11 countries in Asia. To remember those who lost their lives and those left behind, Spiritual Care Services held a service of Remembrance and Support on Jan. 5. More than 50 people took part in the service held in the atrium which shared religious prayers from the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish traditions.

Rex Fieck, LPCH/SHC director of Materials Management, gathered more than $30,000 worth of medical supplies to donate on behalf of both SHC and Packard Children's Hospital. Supplies including bandages, stethoscopes, gloves and catheters were shipped on Jan. 6 to the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre (AIMS Hospital) in Cochin, Kerala, India.

"We were able to fill a 24 foot long truck with high quality medical supplies," said Fieck. "This equipment will be going directly to AIMS Hospital for tsunami victims coming into the hospital and for triage teams heading out to the local villages to deliver medical care."

Money is the most critical relief need in tsunami-struck Asia, but a Sri Lankan physician on Stanford's faculty said that skilled volunteers, including health professionals, will be needed for reconstruction efforts in the coming months.

Yaso Natkunam, a Sri Lankan who is assistant professor of pathology at Stanford, said she is interested in talking with her colleagues about how they can help. While she may be traveling to Asia, she should be reached through (650) 725-9354 or yaso@stanford.edu.

Natkunam works with International Medical Health Organization (IMHO), a nongovernmental organization (NGO) registered in the U.S. and "well mobilized in those areas that need the greatest assistance," she said.

IMHO may be contacted for information or to make an online donation at: http://www.thousa.org/index.htm. She also suggested donations to Tamil Rehabilitation Organization: http:// www.troonline.org/en/
