When a Cancer Center staff member suggested that the voice activated device used on the cult television show Star Trek to “beam me up” would be useful in the Infusion Treatment Area, the hospital responded with an off-the-shelf, hands-free voice activated communications badge that helps patient care staff keep in contact with an entire team while continuing to work.

Mysti Smith-Bentley, assistant nurse manager in the Infusion Treatment Area, can talk on the “Star Trek” communicator badge with a physician about a patient. But the device has a light side: Say, “beam me up,” and the communicator plays Other Worldly music.
