Back in Latvia

Christopher Zarins, chief of vascular surgery, returned to his country of birth, Latvia, in November to receive that nation's highest honor, the "Tris Zvaigznu Ordenis" (Three Star Order). The Stanford surgeon, who maintains close personal and professional ties with Latvia, chats (he's fluent in Latvian) with the republic's president, Vaira Vike-Friberga, center, and wife, Zinta Zarins, during ceremonies in his honor. Zarins was 3 when his father took the family to New York, where the elder Zarins led the Latvian Lutheran Church for many years.
