Cancer Center progress continues

The new building, Stanford Advanced Medicine Center, housing the Cancer Center is scheduled to begin receiving and treating patients after March 1. Until that day, procedures sites will remain unchanged to provide for a near seamless shift of operations, said Carol Wilcox, administrative director of the new center.

Current patients will be receiving letters explaining changes they will encounter. Physicians with questions about the relocation, referrals or where to send patients for appointments, should call the cancer referral line, (877) 668-7535.

Wilcox said clinics have generally been designed around diagnoses, such as lung cancer, rather than around classic specialties, such as oncology or surgical oncology. This has been done to facilitate interaction among practitioners in several specialties and to offer patients services at a single location whenever feasible.

A gala opening event is planned Feb. 4, after which personnel will begin moving into the building, Wilcox said. Other celebratory events are being planned in the months and weeks before the event. Medical staff members should be receiving information about building tours scheduled before the March 1 opening.

Meanwhile, finishing touches are being applied to the building, including landscaping.

The building, formally known as the Center for Cancer Treatment and Prevention/Ambulatory Care Pavilion, is adjacent to Stanford and Packard Hospitals, across the street from 900 Welch Road.
