December Highlights of Performance Improvement at SHC

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee
chaired by Joseph Hopkins, associate chief of staff

Tracer Rounds
Tracking and documenting care of a selected patient throughout hospitalization resumed in January. Bi-weekly hospital-wide Tracer Rounds will follow monthly tracer audits in departments and units. The Tracer Rounds group includes senior hospital leadership, the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Department, Quality Management and clinical services representatives. Tracer Rounds will occur once on each unit during 2005 and will be reported monthly to the QIPSC.

MRI-compatible IV pumps,
currently available from the MRI department, should be more widely available in other units for patients to be transported for MRI. Nurses on applicable units should be trained in the use of specialized pumps and accompany patients to MRI.

National Patient Safety Goals
Good compliance in most areas. Enhanced physician effort sought in achieving Consent & Schedule OK and H&P completion in the Ambulatory Surgery Center.

FDA Watch
The QIPSC will serve as a clearing house for reports from Materials Management to help users replace items affected by recalls and alerts from the Food and Drug Administration. The purpose is to make replacement of recalled items seamless for patients
