(A) Above, members of the Stanford Liver Transplant Team join Giants players and executives before the May 27 Giants Arizona Diamondbacks contest at SBC Park. To the right of the podium are Joanne Imperial, hepatologist; Mark Welton, associate professor and chief of colorectal surgery; Carlos Esquivel, professor of surgery and chief of transplantation; and Tito Monge, physician assistant in the liver program.
(B) Center, Joanne Imperial,
associate professor of medicine and hepatologist in the Stanford's Liver
Transplant program gets a hug from San Francisco Giants president and
managing general partner Peter Magowan during a pre-game ceremony
May 27 marking the 7th annual Organ Donor Awareness Day at a Giant's home
game. The event highlights the work of the "Step To the Plate Foundation,"
which has donated more than $200,000 to help the families of organ donor
recipients. Imperial was the hepatologist for Lori Gardner, wife of bullpen
coach and Giants alumnus Mark Gardner. In 1998, Gardner received a liver
transplant at Stanford which extended her life. John Kerner, professor
of pediatrics, spearheaded the collaboration which brings together the
Giants, the Gardner family, Stanford physicians and the California Transplant
Donor Network to promote awareness and raise money for liver transplantation. |
