GABRIEL GARCIA, professor of medicine (gastroenterology and hepatology) and director of admissions for the School of Medicine, has been appointed head of the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University. He is expected to continue his Medical School duties while serving in the part-time position.
RICHARD HOPPE, the Henry S. Kaplan-Harry Lebeson Professor of Cancer Biology, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Gold Medal Award from the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). The service chief in radiation oncology will receive the Gold Medal at ASTRO’s annual meeting in Boston in November.
WILLIAM DEMENT, the Lowell W. and Josephine Q. Berry Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Professor, by courtesy, of Psychology, recently received an honorary doctor of science degree from New York City’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine in recognition of his seminal work on sleep.
PHILIP SUNSHINE, emeritus professor of pediatrics in the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine, is the recipient of the 2006 Silver and Gold Award from the University of Colorado Medical Alumni Association. The award is the highest recognition bestowed by the Association for professional achievement and community service.
THEODORE C. SECTISH, associate professor of pediatrics, was awarded the Walter W. Tunnessen, Jr., MD Award by the Association of Pediatric Program Directors for his nationally recognized role in advancing postgraduate pediatric education.
Four medical staff members newly named to endowed chairs were honored at a reception recently in the Cantor Art Museum at Stanford. The new medical staff endowed professors, their new titles, and positions are:
LAWRENCE L.K. LEUNG, the Maureen Lyles D’Amborogio Professor in Medicine, a hematologist and recently named chief of staff at the VAPAHCS (Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System).
WILLIAM MALONEY, the Elsbach-Richards Professor in Surgery and chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
NORMAN W. RIZK, the Berthold and Belle N. Guggenhime Professor in Medicine, a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist and senior associate dean for adult clinical affairs in the School of Medicine.
LINDA M. SHORTLIFFE, the Stanley McCormick Memorial Professor, chair of urology.
