Giants event begun by Stanford physician raises funds for organ donation

In effort begun six years ago by pediatrics professor John Kerner to raise sports fans' an awareness about organ donation, continues to bear fruit each year with the San Francisco Giants' annual Donor Awareness Day. At this year's event, held April 16 in a pre-game ceremony at Pacific Bell Park, Mike Crockett, a board member of the Giants Community Fund, presented a $5,000 check to the California Transplant Donor Network.

The nonprofit donor network educates the public about the importance of organ donation and works with health-care providers, including Stanford, to coordinate organ recovery and distribution. Each year since 1998, Kerner has coordinated the Giants' annual Donor Awareness Day.

Also appearing at this year's pre-game ceremony was Lucile Packard Children's Hospital patient Whitney Pope, a 9-year-old from Oakdale, who had a life-saving liver transplant when she was 7 months old. Pope spoke to the crowd about the importance of organ donation.
