In recent meetings with the Departments of Medicine, Neurology and Neurological Sciences, and Neurosurgery, Medical Dean Philip A. Pizzo encouraged faculty and staff leaders to embark with colleagues throughout Stanford on a course of greater interdisciplinary collaboration. "I reiterated my perspective that the future will require greater interdisciplinary and more interdepartmental alignments and collaborations in order to create new and exciting opportunities," the dean reported in a recent e-newsletter. "I also affirmed that this was an opportunity for Stanford to be a national leader and to set and create new standards and expectations," the dean added. Pizzo said that the visit was part of an ongoing effort to establish a dialogue and take a fresh look at the role of academic medicine and to urge departments "to re-invent themselves from within" and promote collaboration. He said he would seek to make changes without major departmental or institutional restructuring but with an infusion of strong and visionary leadership. -Courtesy
