STEPHEN FORTMANN, professor of medicine and director of the Stanford Prevention Research Center, is the 2005 recipient of the Joseph Stokes Award from the American Society of Preventive Cardiology. This award is given in recognition of excellence in furthering education, research and the practice of preventive cardiology. The award honors Joseph Stokes III, a cardiologist and epidemiologist and co-principal investigator of the Framingham Heart Study, a project that is widely recognized for advancing understanding of the causes and prevention of heart disease. The award was presented May 1 in conjunction with the Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease, Epidemiology and Prevention held in Washington D.C.

SANDRA J. HORNING, professor of medicine in the divisions of medical oncology and blood and marrow transplantation, has become president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She began her one-year term at ASCO's 41st annual meeting, attended by some 30,000 cancer specialists in Orlando, FLA May 13-17. With 23,000 members representing more than 100 countries, ASCO is the world's largest professional society for physicians of all disciplines who care for people with cancer. Horning has been a member of numerous federal panels. Her research interests are the biology and management of lymphoproliferative disorders.

WILLIAM NORTHWAY, professor of radiology (diagnostic radiology) and of pediatrics (pediatric radiology), emeritus, received Stanford's 2005 JE Wallace Sterling Lifetime Alumni Achievement Award at a May 6 Alumni Dinner at the Cantor Arts Center. Northway may be best known for his seminal studies defining the pathogenesis and natural history of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

INDER PERKASH, professor of urology/physical medicine and rehabilitation, received a faculty award May 12 during the 6th annual Stanford Asian American Awards ceremonies. He was the only medical center physician - and only one of two faculty members - honored by the group in 2005 for "tremendous service, achievement and dedication."

CLETE A. KUSHIDA, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was elected to the 12-member board of directors of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for a three-year term starting in July. He currently serves as chair of the Standards of Practice Committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. .

RONALD DALMAN has been promoted to professor of surgery.

TERRY DESSER has been promoted to associate professor of radiology.

KRISTEN GANJOO has been appointed to assistant professor of medicine (oncology).

SHASHANK JOSHI has been appointed to assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

LAURENCE KATZNELSON has been appointed to associate professor of neurosurgery and of medicine (endocrinology, gerontology and metabolism).

PHILLIP YANG has been appointed to assistant professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine).
