Chief of Staff Bryan D. Bohman selects the two $500 Medical Staff Educational Stipends’ winners during the annual Nurse Week Brunch on May 7. Steadying the box is Suzanne Taylor, manager of the Center for Education and Professional Development. The Medical Staff gives the stipends annually in appreciation to nurses who plan to use the money for tuition for a degree program or attendance at a professional conference. Bohman this year pulled the names of Coronary Care/Coronary Surveillance Unit Manager Carole Kulick, who planned to use the stipend to attend a critical care conference in June in San Francisco, and Emergency Services Nurse Educator Michelle Woodfall, who is slated to use the award to attend the Emergency Nurses Association Scientific Assembly in Minneapolis in September. Every year during National Nurses Week, SHC pays tribute to Stanford nurses with such activities as a traditional brunch and award ceremony, unit poster session in the atrium, ice cream social, nurse shadowing on units, and rounds on units by nursing administration to personally say thank you.
Also during the brunch (not shown) Randy Vagelos, medical director of the Cardiac Care Unit, presented the Joan Mersch Award to Mary Ann Champagne, clinical nurse specialist in preventive cardiology. The award’s namesake is a longtime Stanford cardiac nurse and manager.
