JCAHO dates set in April, IMO survey deferred

Tuesday April 13 through Friday April 16 have been set for the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' (JCAHO) triennial survey, SHC has announced.

The accreditation survey team will be smaller than usual this year because it will only include JCAHO surveyors: one physician, one nurse, one administrator, one ambulatory care specialist and one surveyor-trainee, said Rebecca Partridge, director of accreditation and regulatory affairs for Stanford Hospital and Clinics.

The survey team will NOT include physicians from the Institute of Medical Quality (on behalf of the California Medical Association) or regulators from the California Department of Health Services (DHS). The IMQ and the DHS will come - unannounced - at another time in 2004 or later to conduct the licensing survey. This is intended to evaluate compliance with the California Code of Regulations, Title 22.

Partridge said the JCAHO team will use some new survey methods emphasizing spontaneous interactions or interviews with members of the medical staff and various hospital and clinic personnel. The surveyors are likely to ask questions about processes of patient care and the National Patient Safety Goals, as well as general policies and knowledge appropriate to the queried professional's level of responsibility.
