"Not a Cough in a Carload" exhibit at Lane Medical Library
For some people it’s hard to believe that tobacco companies throughout much of the early and mid-20th century used physician endorsements to promote the “health benefits” of their brands. But Robert Jackler, chair of otolaryngology, and his wife, Laurie, have collected many of these ads, and now have loaned more than 150 of these images for a display at Lane. Shown above at Feb. 12 ceremonies launching the current exhibit, scheduled to run through May, are, from left, the Jacklers with Dean Philip Pizzo. At rear is history professor Robert N. Proctor, who spoke at the opening about cigarette advertising.
