President Bush taps Martha Marsh to serve on advisory council

Martha M. Marsh, CEO of Stanford Hospital & Clinics, was recently appointed by President Bush to serve on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council. Marsh joins 23 other national leaders, industry CEOs, academicians and state and local government representatives with responsibilities for the security of critical information infrastructures. Marsh is the only health-care representative on the council.

"Health care is an important part of the nation's infrastructure," said Marsh. "I'm honored to assist in the national effort to secure critical systems and provide guidance in the country's homeland security activities. Health-care leaders are deeply concerned about our nation's security as it relates to providing medical services to our communities."

Recent stories in the media have questioned whether the nationŐs health-care system is prepared to handle a terrorist attack or disaster. California hospitals are hoping to receive state grants to enhance compatibility among hospital communication systems and equipment.

The National Infrastructure Advisory Council will make recommendations regarding the security of the cyber and information systems of national security and economic-critical infrastructures. The council will also examine ways that partnerships between the public and private sectors can be enhanced to improve homeland security.

Marsh currently serves on the boards of directors of the California Healthcare Association, the Integrated Healthcare Association and the Blue Cross of California Hospital Relations Committee. She is also a member of the national Healthcare Research and Development Institute.
