Hospital Board resolves to retain current staff structure after 2008 (Thirty-year medical staff member Jerry Shefren, SHC vice president/Ambulatory Care and chief of the General Gynecology Division, discusses the hospital board's resolution on medical staff access. [See related story]). The Board of Hospital Directors of Stanford Hospital and Clinics has approved a resolution reaffirming SHC's commitment to serve as both a university and community hospital. The resolution - adopted unanimously Aug. 31 - explicitly addresses longstanding community physician concerns that hospital privileges might end or close for nonfaculty physicians in 2008 - when terms of a July 1, 1968 agreement between Stanford and the City of Palo Alto are set to expire. Under terms of that 40-year agreement, Stanford purchased
the City of Palo Alto's interest in the Palo Alto-Stanford Hospital
from the city for $1 million and assumed certain Palo Alto Hospital
bonds to create a Stanford-owned hospital, now SHC. Members of the Palo
Alto Medical Staff of the Palo Alto-Stanford Hospital at the time of
the agreement were guaranteed staff eligibility at the new Stanford-owned
facility for the duration of their professional careers. |
