Betsy Williams, longtime adminstrator
named interim chief operating officer

Betsy Williams, vice president for clinical support at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, has been named interim chief operating officer of the organization.

Williams is helping to oversee day-to-day operations following the March 31 retirement of Malinda Mitchell, the hospital's chief executive officer. While a permanent CEO is being sought, Williams will be part of a three-member executive operations committee along with chief medical officer Peter Gregory and chief financial officer Ken Sharigian. The committee will "ensure a team approach and broad perspective on all decisions impacting operations at SHC," Mitchell said.

In addition, Mitchell announced that Gregory, who had planned to retire this month, will remain on active service through Aug. 31.

Eugene Bauer, vice president for the medical center, said Mitchell will continue to provide executive leadership and consultation on budgetary and other issues during a search for her replacement. The hospital has engaged the Korn Ferry International search firm to seek candidates for the CEO position, and Bauer said he hopes to identify final candidates by early summer.

Williams started at Stanford Hospital in 1970 as one of two supervisors in the transfusion service and blood bank. In her most recent role, she has been responsible for a broad spectrum of departments, including neurosciences, the psychiatry and anesthesia service lines, medical records, Menlo Medical Clinic, the Cowell Student Health Service, the complementary medicine clinic, surgical pathology, radiation oncology and respiratory therapy.

Williams said she would probably retain direct responsibility for medical records, radiation oncology and the Menlo clinic during her time as interim COO, while other departments will be reassigned as needed..
