Service Workers Vote for Union Representation
By a 770 to 481 vote on Nov. 19 and 20, service and maintenance workers at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital have elected to be represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 715.

The new bargaining group consists of about 1,500 employees in jobs such as office assistant, food service worker, housekeeping assistant and nursing assistant. Results were sent to the National Labor Relations Board for final certification.

"While we are disappointed by the outcome, we respect the right of our employees to be represented by a union if they so desire," said Peter Van Etten, chief executive officer of UCSF Stanford Health Care. "We have a history of working to develop constructive relationships with unions that represent our employees," he said.

"We will continue to manage our hospitals in an inclusive manner based on honesty, cooperation and mutual trust," said Malinda Mitchell, chief operating officer of Stanford Hospital and Clinics.

Christopher Dawes, chief operating officer of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, added, "We are dedicated to promoting the best interests of our employees and our institution as we both strive to continue to provide excellent care for our patients."
