It's physicians turn to innovate A Cost Containment Steering Committee, chaired by Stanford Hospital and Clinics' Chief Medical Officer Peter Gregory, has been charged with cutting $9 million from the SHC 1999-2000 fiscal year budget. Unlike earlier efforts to improve financial outcome by cutting costs or developing new programs, the latest effort is physician-led with the institutional commitment that future cost improvements can only come through the leadership of the medical staff. In the second of a continuing series of articles, the Medical Staff Update looks at how physicians, working with physician-led clinical resource management committees throughout the institution, are creatively finding opportunities to cut costs while improving - or at least maintaining - patient outcome. |
