(Above left photo) Stanford faculty neonatologist David Stevenson talks with UCSF neonatologist Joseph Kitterman, second from left, during the first live Internet telemedicine patient consultation between the United States and China, which was held at Packard Children’s Hospital June 25. Physicians on both sides of the Pacific were able to consult to craft a treatment plan for two pediatric patients using real-time communication and simultaneous sharing of information, including images, photos, medical records and other graphics. The demonstration coincided with President Bill Clinton’s first visit to China and was intended in part to show how health care professionals can take advantage of the power of the Internet, said Robert Yung, Sun Microsystems’ chief technology officer for Asia, who led the technical team that established the link. The project was organized by the California-based nonprofit Bridge to Asia Foundation. Also shown, left, is Christina Hui Li, an international patient coordinator with UCSF Stanford’s International Medical Services, and Michael Fuchs, Stanford medical center’s Web projects manager.

UCSF Stanford expands Brown & Toland
to include Stanford doctors

UCSF Stanford Health Care completed a contract in mid-June to expand participation in the Brown & Toland Medical Group to Stanford faculty physicians and to the physicians with whom they subcontract, announced UCSF Stanford chief medical officer Bruce Wintroub.

In the past several months, the independent practice association (IPA) has been actively enrolling selected community physicians in San Mateo County, Wintroub said. At this phase, he said, physicians are being credentialed so that they can be listed as Brown & Toland physicians in health plan directories. The effective date for Stanford's actual participation in Brown & Toland will be Jan. 1, 1999.
