Reitz Heads Merged Cardiac Service Line

Bruce A. Reitz, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Stanford Hospital and
Clinics, has been named to the newly created position of cardiac service line director at UCSF Stanford Health Care. As service line director, Reitz will coordinate the adult cardiology and cardiac surgery programs at Stanford, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF/Mount Zion. Cardiac services make up nearly a third of the total activity of UCSF Stanford and draw patients from all over the world. "In addition to being a nationally renowned cardiac surgeon, Dr. Reitz has the necessary management skills and esteem of his peers to effectively implement an integrated cardiac program between UCSF and Stanford," said Bruce Wintroub, UCSF Stanford chief medical officer. "Over the past two years, Dr. Reitz has been instrumental in organizing a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to cardiac care at Stanford. We will empower him to take his vision of patient-focused care to the larger merged organization." A strong and early advocate of this service line approach, Reitz co-chaired a faculty committee to explore how the concept might be applied to UCSF Stanford. Service lines bring together various clinical disciplines in a coordinated approach intended to improve an individual's care and to streamline the process for the patient. The committee ultimately recommended piloting seven multidisciplinary service lines. Service lines are somewhat uncommon in teaching hospitals, which are typically organized according to traditional medical school departments. Reitz, the Norman E. Shumway Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, is chief of the cardiac surgical service at Stanford Hospital. He has practiced and taught at Stanford for a total of 16 years. He also served as chief of cardiac surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for 10 years. He received his M.D. from Yale and served as a resident and a fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine. |
