Ron Miller, a heart transplant candidate tethered to a left ventricular assist device received a visit in mid-May from his horse, Duke, he had not seen since checking into the Medical Center nine months ago to begin his wait for a donor heart. Cuba's isolation fosters challenges along with charms for medical teams

Despite an embargo that has severely limited medical supplies and postgraduate medical education, Cuba offers charms and a uniquely positive work environment for visiting physicians, said Stephen Schendel, professor and chair of functional restoration. (See Story)


Stanford experts invited by Medicare official to play a role in defining program coverage

The physician responsible in Northern California for managing Medicare Part B coverage inclusions told Stanford physicians in May that they could play a direct role in determining what services should be covered.

"What is medically necessary or reasonable [for Medicare to cover]? The way we figure that out is with advice from leading experts in medicine, including yourselves," said Gerald N. Rogan, the medical director from National Heritage Insurance Company-Medicare Part B Program. (See Story)
